    Sigma Purlin Roll Forming Machines Explained

    A sigma (Σ) channel is not a C, Z, or hat. Flower design uses more bend lines in the web. Station-count bands from tooling wiki are guidelines, not a named mill quotation.

    1. What a sigma section is

    A sigma (Σ) channel looks like a C that picked up two extra folds in the web, so the web is not a flat plate. Those folds add stiffness and change every roll after the first bend. Buyers also write sigma purlin, sigma beam, racking upright cousin, or “C with a folded web.” If the PDF is a plain Cee or Zed, stop and go to the C/Z encyclopedias.

    The section is still an open cold-formed profile. It is not a hot-rolled I-beam and it is not a hat with two brims.

    2. Where it is used

    Sigma shows up as roof or wall secondary in some building systems, and as racking / storage uprights or beams in others. The mill does not care about the marketing name. It cares about web folds, lip returns, thickness, yield, and whether holes are punched in the flat or after form.

    Light-gauge ceiling hat / omega is a different family. Structural hat / sigma parameters stay off C47 furring.

    3. Why the flower is longer than a C

    A simple symmetric C in those same tables sits around 12–16 stations. A Z-purlin guideline sits around 18–24 with sequential bends. Those rows are neighbours. Automatic C80-300 (14 stations, ~15 kW) and CZ auto-changeover (20 stands, 42 kW servo) stay on C/Z inquiries.

    4. Nearby mills that will not make it

    • Dedicated C or Z, or C/Z interchange — lips and a flat web. Changeover does not grow web folds.
    • CUZ auto-width — C, U and Z on one named line (1.0–3.0 mm, ellipse punches). Still not sigma.
    • Hat / solar strut — brims, not a folded web. 24-pass 22 kW strut is a different quotation.
    • Furring / omega — light ceiling gauge.

    5. What to send instead

    There is no named process quotation in this batch titled “sigma purlin mill” with a locked kW, voltage, or decoiler tonnage. Inventing a “typical 18.5 kW sigma line” from the Z Automatic table would be a merge. The correct commercial path is a section drawing and a written proposal.

    If a salesman offers to “just add two stands to the C mill,” treat that as a new flower, not a spare-parts order.

    Is sigma the same as C with extra lips?

    No. The extra work is in the web folds. Lips are a different problem.

    Can a C/Z interchangeable mill run sigma with a recipe?

    Not unless the quotation names sigma tooling. Interchange in this catalogue is C and Z (and CUZ adds U).

    Can I use the 18–22 station band as a guaranteed mill length?

    No. It is a flower guideline. Yield, pre-punch, and calibration stands move the count.

    Is this a hat purlin machine?
