    10-Ton Decoiler: Heavy Coil Handling Guide

    What a 10-ton decoiler nameplate actually rates, how coil mass is calculated, and how that reel differs from a 10 t tipper or loading car. Named hydraulic packages stay labeled.

    1. What the 10 t plate rates

    A 10-ton decoiler is rated on coil mass. The mandrel, bearings, base, and expand cylinders are built to hold about 10 000 kg in the eye. The plate does not rate forming speed, roof profile, or how many hours a coil lasts. Those come from width, thickness, OD, and the mill behind the reel.

    Search traffic writes “decoiler 10 ton” as if it were a mill class. It is a coil-handling class. A 10 t hydraulic uncoiler on a floor-deck line and a 10 t hydraulic uncoiler on a dual-layer roof line share a mass neighbourhood. They do not share voltage, car layout, or drive unless the order says so.

    The general decoiler wiki already lists hydraulic reels in a 3–15 t neighbourhood and motorized reels in a 5–25 t neighbourhood. This page stays on the 10 t nameplate and the machines that get confused with it.

    2. Other 10 t machines in the same hall

    Three named process quotations wear the same tonnage and none of them is the decoiler:

    A recoiler that winds scrap or finished strip is a fourth machine even when the mass is similar. A 25 t double-head decoiler on a heavy CTL line is a heavier class than 10 t.

    3. A named 10 t hydraulic package

    One verified companion on a floor-deck order is a 10 t hydraulic decoiler with coil car: speed sensor, press arm, remote, brake, electrics 220 V 3φ on that specification. The same order’s 8 m automatic stacker is a different quotation. Decoiler numbers stay on the decoiler; stacker numbers stay on the stacker.

    Roof and dual-layer wiki notes also talk about a ~10 t hydraulic uncoiler feeding some high-speed dual-layer packages (with a long auto stack on those builds). That is a market / proposal class. 220 V and 380 V halls stay labeled; a second mandrel is only on the dual-head quotation.

    If a BOM line says 5 t manual and another line on the same CTL inquiry says 10 t hydraulic, treat it as a conflict until the signed proposal locks one tonnage.

    4. How a coil reaches about 10 t

    Mass is geometry, not a catalogue slogan. Steel density ρ ≈ 7850 kg/m³; dimensions in metres:

    W = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × width × ρ

    Worked example — OD 1500 mm, ID 508 mm, thickness 1.5 mm:

    That 350 mm coil is still a 5 t neighbourhood. To reach about 10 t at the same OD, ID and 1.5 mm, width is about 800 mm (W ≈ 9.8 t). A 1250 mm roof coil at the same OD is heavier still. Run the formula on the coil you actually buy, then pick the next nameplate up.

    5. Car, crane, press arm

    At 10 t the crew rarely rolls the coil onto the mandrel by hand. A coil car (or a crane with a C-hook) does the seating. The 10 t loading-car quotation above is one way to buy that motion as a separate crate: 0.9 m lift, horizontal plus vertical travel, 5.5 kW. Other orders weld the car to the decoiler frame. Say which you want.

    A press arm holds the outer wrap when the bands come off. Without it a 10 t coil can clock-spring. A speed sensor or loop arm is what keeps driven payoff from overrunning a stop-cut mill. Remote jog is for threading, not for leaving the reel unmanned.

    Crane capacity in the hall has to exceed the coil plus spreader. Undersize the crane and the 10 t decoiler never sees a 10 t coil.

    7. Buyer FAQ

    Is every 10 t decoiler hydraulic?

    No. Ten tonnes is the mass. Expansion can be hydraulic while payoff is still a brake, or both expand and payoff can be powered. Write both on the order.

    Can I use a 10 t tipper as a decoiler?

    No. The tipper only turns the eye. Strip still needs a mandrel and a brake or drive.

    Does 10 t mean I can run 10 mm strip?

    No. Thickness is a mill and leveler question. A light-gauge coil can weigh 10 t if it is wide and tall.

    Is a dual-head 4 t + 4 t the same as 10 t?

    No. That named dual-head is 4 t per side. Two heads do not add into a 10 t single mandrel.
