

On roll-forming RFQs, automatic decoiler usually means the mandrel is driven: a motor (often with a VFD) pays off strip so tension follows the mill, instead of the mill dragging a free reel against a hand brake. Hydraulic expansion of the eye is a separate option. A coil car is a third. None of these makes the reel unmanned — someone still loads the coil.
The existing decoiler encyclopedia already maps types (manual / hydraulic expand / motorized / double-head / vertical). This page is only the upgrade question: keep the hand reel, or buy driven payoff.
A manual unit expands the mandrel with a handwheel or lever and holds back-tension with a friction brake. The forming mill (or an operator pulling the first wraps) takes the strip. There is no VFD clip on this machine. If a video shows a motor on the mandrel, it is not this page.
A verified named process quotation is a 5 t manual decoiler: mechanical expand, friction brake, base frame and coil support packed in two crates, blue finish as standard. Loading is crane or fork. That 5 t nameplate is one build. The older type table in the general decoiler wiki lists many manuals in a 1–3 t band for prototype and thin-gauge work — those are typical ranges, not this 5 t crate.
The job the operator cannot skip: centre the coil before the mill pulls, and live with the brake. Too loose and the strip loops; too tight and the mill stretches light gauge or stalls.
Driven payoff: the mandrel turns under power, usually a little slower than line speed so the strip stays in tension. As coil OD falls, drive speed has to rise if you want the same strip speed. Better packages add a dancer or loop arm so the drive is not a fixed hunch.
Hydraulic expand (cylinder, not a handwheel) is common on the same frame once coils get heavy, because expanding a tight eye by hand on a 7–10 t coil is slow and off-centre coils walk when the drive ramps. A press arm holding the outer wrap when bands are cut is a safety item, not “automation.”
A verified motorized example in this catalogue is a 7 t electric decoiler: four-segment expand plates, 6215 bearings, main motor 3 kW through a 4 kW VFD, brake required on stop, electrics on that specification 350 V / 50 Hz / 3φ (check the nameplate). Single head. Same-order dual-layer roof mill and 5 t manuals on that host are other machines — their numbers stay off this reel.

A slow 5 t roof mill does not become a better mill because the decoiler has a VFD. Spend the money on the mill if the reel is not the bottleneck. Upgrade the reel when slack loops, stretched strip, or changeover time are the weekly complaint.

General wiki bands (manual 1–3 t, hydraulic 3–15 t, motorized 5–25 t) are selection neighbourhoods. The 3 kW motor stays on the 7 t electric reel; 50 m/min stays on the mill that names it, not on a stop-cut roof line.
Hydraulic expand is the eye. Automatic payoff is the drive (or a specified brake + dancer). Write both on the purchase order if you want both.
