Metal Folding Machines: Folding vs Roll Forming

    28August 19, 2026
A folder bends blanks. A roll former profiles coil continuously. 8 m CNC folder (~7.5/8 kW, ~125°) is not a roof mill. 3 m press brake ≤2 mm is a third crate.

    1. Blank in, fold, next bend

A metal folding machine clamps a sheet and flips a beam (or rams a brake punch) to a programmed angle. Each bend is a cycle. Length is the table, not a flower of 18 stands. K-style gutters can be folded this way; volume gutters are usually rolled — that fork is the gutter-folding encyclopedia.

    2. Coil in, stands, cut

Roll forming is continuous. Station count follows the profile (tooling wiki: simple C 12–16, roofing 15–22, deck 22–30+). Speed is m/min. You do not re-program a 125° fold; you change rolls or pick another deck.

    5. Buyer FAQ

Can the 8 m folder replace a roof mill?

Not for coil production. It folds blanks up to ~1.5 mm steel on that tech note.

Is a press brake a folding machine?

In search traffic, yes. Mechanically it is a ram brake. Clamp-and-flip CNC folder is the 8 m class above.

    Does sectional-door flip-bend count?

Those two flip-bend stations are part of a door-panel roll line (0.8–1.0 mm, ~14 stands). They are not a 3 m brake.

Folder kW and mill kW are not interchangeable. Commercial terms come back on the offer.
