What Is a Cable Tray Roll Forming Machine? Tray, Trough & Ladder Explained

Short answer: A cable tray roll forming machine cold-forms steel coil into cable management sections — tray, trough and cable-bridge profiles — punching the holes or slots and cutting to length in one continuous line. A documented production line runs 0.5 ± 0.03 to 2.0 ± 0.03 mm steel at a 150–850 mm feed width, with a hydraulic decoiler → servo feeding → 400-ton punching press → leveling → roll forming → hydraulic cutting → automatic receiving table flow, at 6–12 m/min depending on part length and hole quantity; a separate adjustable-width machine covers 50–600 mm formed width at 1–2 mm, with a 12-row, 80 mm solid-shaft forming body on a ~7 t frame.

The most important thing to understand before buying: "cable tray machine" is a search phrase, not one product. Trough (U-channel) lines, perforated tray machines and ladder tray machines are different machines — and documented cable tray quotations disagree on power and thickness, so the specification you compare must carry its source.

Tray, trough, bridge, ladder: four different things

Buyers search cable tray machine, cable trough, cable bridge and perforated tray as if they were one mill. They are not:

    ProductWhat it isMade on
    Trough / U-channelContinuous roll-formed U channel with side wallsThe trough / cable-bridge line
Perforated trayTray with a dense hole fieldA different machine — the hole field and tooling differ
Ladder trayTwo side rails joined by rungsNot the trough line — different construction
Cable bridgeThe same trough family in many cataloguesThe trough / U line

Documented formed width for the trough family runs about 100–600 mm, with some catalogues starting from 50 mm; height is commonly 50–200 mm, with 50–100 mm classes on some lines. Width and height are quotation inputs — a 600 × 200 mm trough does not run on the same flower as a 100 × 50 U.

How the line works: coil to stacked tray

A documented automatic cable tray production line (with 400 T punching station) runs this sequence:

    1. Hydraulic decoiler — holds and pays off the steel coil
    2. Servo feeding system — indexes the strip accurately for punching
    3. 400-ton hydraulic punching press — holes and slots, positioned by servo feed
    4. Leveling system — flattens the strip
    5. Roll forming machine — GCr15 rollers, heat treated to HRC 58–62
    6. Hydraulic cutting system — Cr12 blade cuts to length
    7. Automatic receiving table — parts stack ready for bundling

The PLC on that line lets the operator adjust tray width and height, so one roller system can produce multiple tray sizes — the flexibility that decides whether you can quote mixed orders without a second machine.

    The speed question: 60–70 m/min or 3–6 m/min?

This is where cable tray quotations most often mislead. Documented sources on the same product family show very different speed figures:

    • A product page for the adjustable 50–600 mm machine states a forming speed of 60–70 m/min (customized), with the note that speed depends on profile shape and material thickness.
    • The trough-line documentation, by contrast, records forming around 3–6 m/min, with pre-cut punch lines at ~2–4 m/min and a decoil/feed class of 0–10.

Both figures can be real, because they measure different things: a forming-only benchmark on a simple profile at ideal conditions is not the working rate of a line whose punch pattern and cut cycle dominate the clock. Ask for the rate at your tray drawing, your hole pattern and your thickness — and expect that number to be far below the headline. If a supplier quotes only one speed number with no profile attached, that is the number to question.

Why there is no single "host kW" for a cable tray machine

Documented cable tray quotations package power differently, and the figures are not interchangeable:

Source / packageWhat that quotation says
ENHydraulic punch/cut ~15 kW + multi-motor forming (not collapsed to one host figure)
U100-600 total package~94.5 kW package with host ~7.5 kW on that quotation
EgyptHost ~30 kW on that quotation
YX (~20 stands)Host ~22 kW on that quotation

A hydraulic punch/cut figure, a total installed package and a host motor figure are different accounting units. Asking "what is the kW of a cable tray machine" without naming the package will get you four different answers — all of them correct for their own quotation. When you compare quotes, compare the same unit, and ask for the itemized power list.

Thickness bands are not one range either

SourceStands / host noteThickness on that quotation
EN~22 stands0.8–2.0 mm (variant note: can change to 0.5–1.0)
    U(package above)1.0–1.2 mm
    YX~20 stands, host ~22 kW1.0–2.0 mm

Do not merge these into a single universal band. Name the band you need (and the source it came from) so the tooling, motor sizing and press tonnage are built for it.

    Pre-cut punch vs post-cut

Two configuration variants share the same trough family:

    • Pre-cut then form — punch/cut upstream of the mill, then roll form the blank
    • Post-cut — form continuous strip, then cut (and punch as configured)

These are options on one family, not two product families — but the punch pattern, die set and cut length still have to match your drawing.

What a cable tray line is not

    • Perforated tray — a different machine
    • Ladder tray — not the trough/U line
    • Fire-damper lines — blade/frame geometry, a different product family
    • Cabinet and enclosure lines — panel and bend work

If your order includes ladder tray or perforated tray, say so in the RFQ; they are separate lines, not extra dies.

Buying checklist: 7 points for the RFQ

    1. Finished width × height × length class — and whether you need the 50 mm start or the 100–600 mm class.
    2. Thickness and grade — name the band (e.g. 0.5–2.0 mm) and the source it came from.
    3. Pre-cut punch then form, or post-cut — state which flow you need.
    4. Hole / slot pattern — and whether perforated tray is actually required (different machine).
    5. Whether ladder tray or covers are in the same order — separate lines, separate quotes.
    6. Site power and the package you are comparing — host kW, total installed kW, hydraulic punch/cut kW are different units.
    7. Real output at your drawing — tray size, hole quantity and cut length, not a headline speed.

Where to see real cable tray machines and specifications

ZTRFM (zt-rfm.com) is a roll forming sourcing center operated by Zhongtuo Roll Forming (Hebei) Co., Ltd. Cable tray products are commonly specified to the cable management standard of your market (e.g. IEC 61537 or the applicable national standard); ask the supplier which standard and tray drawing your tooling is made to.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a cable tray roll forming machine?

A continuous cold forming line that turns steel coil into cable tray, trough or cable-bridge sections — punching holes or slots and cutting to length in the same pass.

Is a cable tray machine the same as a cable ladder machine?

No. Ladder tray is a different construction (side rails joined by rungs) and is not made on the trough/U-channel line.

Can the same machine make perforated tray?

No — perforated tray is a different machine because the hole field and tooling differ. State it separately in the RFQ.

How fast is a cable tray roll forming line?

Documented figures range from a 6–12 m/min production line (where rate depends on part length and hole quantity) to a 60–70 m/min forming-speed figure on an adjustable machine, while trough documentation records forming around 3–6 m/min. Ask for the rate at your drawing, hole pattern and thickness.

Why do cable tray quotations show such different kW figures?

Because they report different units — a hydraulic punch/cut figure (~15 kW on one file), a total package (~94.5 kW with a ~7.5 kW host on another), and host motors of ~30 kW or ~22 kW elsewhere. Compare the same unit and ask for the itemized power list.

What thickness can a cable tray line run?

Documented bands include 0.5–2.0 mm on an automatic line and 1–2 mm on an adjustable machine; other quotations record 0.8–2.0 mm, 1.0–1.2 mm and 1.0–2.0 mm. Bands are quotation-specific — name yours.

Can one roller system make multiple tray sizes?

Yes on PLC-controlled lines: the operator adjusts tray width and height, so one roller system produces multiple sizes — which reduces the number of machines needed for a mixed order book.
