How to Choose a Roll Forming Line: A Buyer's Framework
The most expensive roll forming line I ever saw was not sitting in a supplier showroom. It was standing idle at a customer's plant in Romania, six months after delivery, because nobody had checked the thickness range before the contract was signed. The machine had been built to form 1.5 mm steel, but the buyer's real production ran at 2.5 mm. Every coil jammed at the entry guide and the operator had to babysit it by hand. That single visit taught me more about how to choose a roll forming line than any brochure I had read before or since.
Buying a roll forming line is a six-figure decision in most cases, and the wrong choice stays in your factory for ten years or more. Below is the framework I walk every serious buyer through before we send a quote. I keep it to eight points. Miss one and you usually pay for it later, often in scrap, rework or downtime.
1. Material and grade
Start with what you will actually feed through the machine. Cold rolled steel, where ASTM A1008 is the common US specification and EN 10130 the European grade, behaves differently from galvanized coil, and both behave differently from aluminium or stainless steel. The yield strength decides how much roll force the stands must deliver. A line tuned for 250 MPa mild steel will not form 550 MPa high-strength steel cleanly without more passes and stiffer side frames. Tell your supplier the exact grade range, not just the word "steel".
2. Thickness range
This is the exact point where the Romanian line failed. State your real minimum and your real maximum, and be honest about how often you hit the edges of that band. Roll forming tolerates a range, not a single number. If you run 0.8 to 2.0 mm, say so. A line built for a 0.8 to 1.5 mm window will struggle above 1.8 mm and the rolls will wear fast. Do not let a supplier size the machine to your most common coil and quietly forget your occasional thick job.
3. Profile and cross-section
The geometry of the finished section drives the pass design. A simple C channel needs fewer stations than an upright with lips, ribs and return flanges. Send the supplier a real drawing with bend radii, lip heights and any embossing you need. The number of roll stations, typically 12 to 20 for a purlin, follows directly from the profile depth and the total bend angle. A vague sketch leads to a line that forms the wrong shape, and re-cutting rolls is not cheap.

4. Line speed and output
Speed is quoted in metres per minute, but what you care about is parts per shift. A line at 20 m/min forming 6 m sheets can out-produce a 30 m/min line forming 3 m sheets, because the cut-off stops the line on every piece. Decide output from your order book, then work backward to line speed. Typical light-gauge lines run 10 to 25 m/min, while heavy purlin lines run 8 to 15 m/min.
5. Tolerance needs
How tight is tight? EN 10162 gives the tolerances for cold rolled steel sections, and most buyers need a straightness of about plus or minus 1 mm per metre with a length tolerance of plus or minus 1 to 2 mm. If you supply a framing system that must interlock with another supplier's part, tighten that requirement. A vague tolerance claim from a manufacturer is a red flag. Ask for the actual number they will put in writing.
6. Automation level
A basic line is decoiler, roll former, cut-off and outfeed table. Add a servo punching unit and you move hole making off a separate press. Add an automatic stacker and one operator becomes enough for the whole shift. Each module raises the price but cuts labour. Match the automation to your labour cost and your volume, not to the supplier's demo video.
7. Budget and return on investment
Prices vary widely by configuration, so I never give a single number until the seven points above are clear. A simple shelf-panel line and a twin-head purlin line are different machines at different costs. Build the payback from saved labour, lower scrap and the new jobs you can now accept. A line that opens one new product line often pays for itself faster than a slightly faster version of what you already make.
8. After-sales and spare parts
Ask who stocks the tooling and how long a replacement roll takes to reach you. A roll forming line lives on its rolls and bearings. If the supplier is 8,000 km away with no local spares, a two-week wait becomes a two-week stoppage. Check for a reference site you can actually call, not only a video on a website.
Questions to ask any supplier
- Can I watch a test run on my profile and my thickness?
- What tolerance do you guarantee, in writing?
- Who holds spare parts in my region?
- May I speak with a customer running the same line?
Red flags
No test run offered, vague tolerance, no reference site, and a quote that arrives before you finish describing the material. Those four together mean the supplier is selling a catalogue machine and hoping it fits your coil.
Takeaway
Reading the quotation
A quote is only useful if it lists the same eight points back to you. When two suppliers return numbers that look close, put them side by side and check the station count, the included punching, the decoiler capacity and what is excluded. The cheap quote is often cheap because it left out the servo punch or the automatic stacker, and you only find that when the line arrives. Ask for the line layout drawing with the quote, not after you have paid.
Coil width and passline
Two details get missed on first orders. The maximum coil width sets how wide a blank you can use, and the passline height sets how the operator loads and how the line meets your building. A passline at 1.0 m suits manual loading; a higher one needs a pit or a platform. Get these wrong and the line fits the floor badly even when it forms the right part, and your crew loses time on every coil change.
Training and installation
The best line still needs a day of training and a level foundation. Ask the supplier what the install needs: concrete mass, power supply, air for the punch, and who commissions it. A line that arrives with no commissioning plan turns a two-week startup into two months, and the lost output is rarely in the quoted price.
Choosing well is mostly discipline. Write the eight points down, send them to two or three suppliers, and compare the answers rather than the photos.
