    ASTM vs EN Steel Standards: Reading a Mill Certificate

    The number that decides a shipment

    I'm Iris Xu, a sales engineer in ZTRFM. Here is a number that has killed more than one import deal: 275. That is the zinc mass in grams per square metre of a G90 galvanized coil, and it is almost the same as Z275 in the European system. Buyers who do not know the two scales think they are ordering different steel. They are not. The certificate, not the sales pitch, is what proves it.

    A mill certificate, sometimes called a mill test report or MTC, is the document that says what the coil actually is. For an overseas buyer it is the only paper that travels with the steel, and reading it correctly is the difference between a profile that forms and one that cracks or rusts early. The trouble is that ASTM and EN grade systems name steel differently even when the metal is nearly the same.

    Two naming worlds

    In the United States, cold-rolled steel for forming is ASTM A1008, and its hot-dip galvanized cousin is ASTM A653. A653 names the zinc coating with a G number: G30 means 0.30 ounces per square foot total both sides, about 90 grams per square metre; G60 is about 180; G90 is about 275. The conversion is straightforward because 1 ounce per square foot equals roughly 305 grams per square metre.

    In Europe the cold-rolled grade is EN 10130, written as DC01 through DC06, and the hot-dip coated grade is EN 10346, written as DX51D and up. Coating there is a Z number in grams per square metre straight: Z100, Z180, Z275, Z350. So G90 and Z275 describe the same coating mass, just in different units. Grade for grade, ASTM A1008 CS Type B lines up with EN 10130 DC01, and A653 DX51D lines up with a commercial galvanized grade.

    The certificate types that matter

    EN 10204 defines the certificate itself, and the two types you will meet are 2.2 and 3.1. A 2.2 is a test report based on non-specific inspection: the numbers come from the same grade but not necessarily your heat. A 3.1 is an inspection certificate with test results from your specific heat and lot, signed by the manufacturer's independent quality representative. For structural or coated steel that must perform, ask for 3.1. The US mill test report, with heat-traceable results, is the practical equivalent of EN 10204 3.1. A 3.2 adds an independent third-party inspector who witnesses the test; that is for nuclear or offshore work and rarely for coil.

    Five lines on the certificate deserve your full attention:

    • Grade and standard. Confirm A1008 or EN 10130, not a near-miss that forms worse.
    • Coating mass. Check G90 equals Z275, and that the number matches the environment you specified.
    • Thickness tolerance. A roll-formed profile lives or dies on consistent gauge.
    • Mechanicals. Yield and tensile must sit inside the range the flower design assumed.
    • Heat or lot number. This is your traceability if a coil ever fails in the field.

    Common import mismatches

    The mismatches we see most are unit slips. A buyer quotes G60 expecting Z275 and receives Z180, half the corrosion life. Or a DC01 is substituted for a drawing that needed DC04, and the deep lip cracks because the lower grade has less elongation. Coating side is another trap: ASTM G is total both sides, while some EN quotes are per side, so read carefully before you reject a coil.

    A mill certificate is not paperwork to file and forget. It is the contract between the steel and your machine. Read the five lines, confirm the units, and the rest of the line will run.

    Reading one certificate, line by line

    Here is a real coil we cleared last month. The certificate read EN 10346 DX51D plus Z275, thickness 1.0 mm minus 0 plus 0.06, yield 320 MPa, tensile 380 MPa, heat number C2411-7. The buyer's drawing called for ASTM A653 G90, which is exactly Z275, so the coating matched. The 1.0 mm with a plus tolerance of 0.06 meant the roll former had to allow for up to 1.06 mm at the tightest bend, which we did by opening the radius 0.1 mm. Yield 320 against the flower's assumed 300 to 350 sat inside range, so no rework. Heat C2411-7 went into the job file for traceability. Five lines, five minutes, green light.

    The yield line hides a trap worth calling out. EN reports Re or Rp0.2, the proof stress at 0.2 percent permanent strain. ASTM often quotes a yield point that can read a little higher for the same metal. If you compare an EN Rp0.2 of 300 to an ASTM yield point of 320 and think the ASTM steel is stronger, you may over-bend it. Always compare like with like, and when in doubt ask the mill for Rp0.2 on both.

    What we tell buyers checking a certificate:

    • Read the coating in one system only. Convert G to Z once, then stop mixing units.
    • Confirm the certificate type. A 2.2 report is not proof of your heat; ask for 3.1.
    • Check the thickness tolerance direction. A plus tolerance changes your bend radius.
    • Save the heat number. It is your only link back to the steel if a claim appears.
    • Match elongation to the lip depth. Low elongation means shallow, gentle lips.

    One last mismatch we warn about: dual-certified steel. Some coils are sold as both ASTM A1008 and EN 10130, which is fine, but the coating line may be quoted only in one system on the certificate. A coil marked G90 with no Z equivalent listed can still be Z275; the absence of the second number is not the absence of the coating. Ask the mill to print both, and the dock inspection gets simple.

    More mills now send the certificate as a PDF with a QR code that opens the same data on the producer's server, so the paper and the database agree. We still read the five lines by hand with the buyer on a call, because a screen showing the right number only helps if someone actually looks at it before the coil is unloaded. And remember the certificate is only as good as the coil it travels with. A 3.1 paper on a coil that was swapped at the warehouse means nothing. Match the heat number on the certificate to the tag on the coil before signing, every time.

    Takeaway

    ASTM and EN are two languages for largely the same metal. Learn the grade pairs and the coating conversion, insist on a 3.1 or an equivalent MTR, and check the five lines before the coil lands. A five-minute read at the dock saves a five-week reorder.
