Roll forming is a high-efficiency metal fabrication process used to create consistent, complex cross-sectional profiles from coiled metal strips. Unlike stamping or press braking, which form parts in discrete steps, roll forming operates continuously, making it ideal for high-volume production of long components.
The process begins with uncoiling a metal strip (steel, aluminum, etc.), which is then fed through a series of roller dies. Each stand of rolls incrementally bends the material until the final profile shape is achieved at the last station. The formed part is then cut to length using a flying cut-off system without stopping the line.
Rolled profiles are ubiquitous in construction and infrastructure. Typical uses include structural steel framing (C/Z purlins), roofing and wall cladding panels, solar mounting structures, highway guardrails, and storage rack systems. The versatility of roll forming allows manufacturers to switch profiles by changing roll sets, offering flexibility for diverse project requirements.
