Highway W-Beam Guardrail Roll Forming Line

A two-wave W-beam guardrail project is a thick-strip forming job, not a roofing job. The line takes 2–4 mm Q235B or Q350 coil, levels it, punches the end and middle holes while the strip is still flat, forms the W2 section through about 16 stands, and cuts the beam to length with a rear shear. Gearbox drive with rear shear is the recommended arrangement. This page covers the two-wave line; three-wave, hoist-change and the supporting unit are addressed in the decision tree below.

    Who it's for

For guardrail beam makers and road safety contractors who need a structural beam section, not a cladding panel. The line is sized for plants that buy coil and ship finished beams, and for factories that already run a post mill and want to bring the beam in house.

    Guardrail beam manufacturers

    Guardrail beam manufacturers

You buy galvanized or pre-painted coil and sell finished beams by the piece. You need a stable section and repeatable hole positions, and you will judge the line on section accuracy and output per shift.

Road safety projects with a fixed standard

Road safety projects with a fixed standard

The project named a standard — JT/T 281, EN 1317 or AASHTO M180 — and you must deliver a two-wave W-beam that meets it. Start from the standard and the profile drawing, then fix the machine.

Factories moving beam production in house

Factories moving beam production in house

You already form the posts and buy the beam outside. Bringing the beam onto your own floor means running both thick-strip lines, so levelling, punch position and shear position all need to be planned together.

    How to choose a line

    1. The project requires a three-wave (thrie-beam) section -> Three-wave complete line (a separate machine) (Two-wave and three-wave are two separate machines — they cannot be treated as two specifications of one machine. Go to the three-wave category; do not take three-wave orders on this page.)
    2. You already own a forming machine and only lack the front- and rear-end stages -> Auxiliary unit: decoiler + levelling servo feeder + punching + shearing (Can be quoted as a complete set or as individual components. This is a separate product line — use the auxiliary-unit page; do not mix it into the complete-line configuration on this page.)
    3. You need both two-wave and three-wave within one year -> Hoist-change dual-purpose line (Quoted separately; manual price review required. Confirm both profile drawings and the annual volume first, then decide between hoist-change and two dedicated machines.)
    4. You only need a standalone punching or cutting machine -> Go to the guardrail auxiliary forming process page (See "Guardrail Auxiliary Forming"; this page covers the complete line only.)
    5. Two-wave only, and the profile drawing is confirmed -> This page: two-wave W-beam guardrail complete line (Split-gearbox drive + rear shear is the recommended configuration; chain drive is the alternative.)

    What's included

This page covers the complete two-wave W-beam guardrail beam line: decoiling and feed, levelling, flat-strip punching for the end holes and middle holes, about 16 forming stands to the W2 section, a hydraulic rear shear, and discharge. It covers the recommended gearbox drive with rear shear and the chain-drive alternative. It covers the equipment selection logic for a two-wave project, the numbers published for this mill, and the profile and standard information to confirm before quoting.

What to send for a quote

    1. 1. Profile drawing, or the standard number the beams must meet (JT/T 281, EN 1317 or AASHTO M180). 2. Two-wave or three-wave — state clearly which section you must produce. 3. Strip thickness and material grade (for example 3 mm Q235B), and the coil width you buy. 4. Working voltage and frequency at your plant. 5. Beam length and your target output per shift, so the speed and shear can be sized. 6. Full line or supporting unit only; and which auxiliary machines you need (bending / arching, end former, repair machine, stacker). 7. Country and port of destination, so packing and shipping terms can be confirmed. 8. Whether you need in-line punching at all, or plain beams cut to length.

    W-beam / W2 / two-wave

    W-beam / W2 / two-wave

    Thrie-beam / W3 / three-wave

A different section made on a different machine, not a setting on this line.

    Guardrail vs barrier

The same structure described from two angles; both mean the horizontal rail in this page's context.

    Handrail second-shaping line

Feeds finished round tube to make a handrail — a different machine. Not a guardrail line.

    Fence panel / palisade mill

Fencing, not highway guardrail. Different thickness, different voltage, different decoiler.

    Hoist-change line

One line that changes between two-wave and three-wave tooling. Quoted separately.

    FAQ

Is one line enough for both two-wave and three-wave?

No. They are separate machines. A hoist-change line that runs both exists but is quoted separately.

Why does the thickness sometimes appear in more than one band?

Because the usable band depends on the material hardness as well as the section. The thickness is fixed against the confirmed profile drawing and the technical proposal, not against a single catalogue figure.

Which drive and shear should I take?

Gearbox drive with rear shear is the recommended arrangement. A chain drive is the alternative and is quoted as such.

What is the difference between forming speed and line speed?

Forming runs at about 15 m/min. Once punching and shearing are in line, plan on about 10 m/min.
