    Rectangular Downpipe Lock-Seam Forming

This process turns coated coil into a closed rectangular downpipe. The strip is folded into flat faces and corners rather than rolled into a circle, so the roll set is a sequence of edge bends and the closing station is a seam fold, not a welding head. The line is short, chain driven, single operator, and ends with a cold saw so the box section keeps square corners at the cut.

    Decoiling

    Decoiling

The coil is loaded on the manual cantilever decoiler and the leading end is released with the coated face running in the finished direction.

    Guide and face forming

    Guide and face forming

vThe side guide squares the strip, and the first stands bend the two long faces while the seam line is kept on the face that will close.

    Corner forming

    Corner forming

Later stands fold the two corners to the drawing radius; the section is a nearly closed box at this point.

    Lock seam closing

    Lock seam closing

The final stations bring the two edges together on one face and fold them into a single lock seam, which locks the box before the cut.

    Cold saw cut

    Cold saw cut

A guarded cold saw with a clamp cuts the pipe to length, leaving a square end and square corners.

    Key details

    Note 1

changing width, height or corner radius means a new roll set, not a panel setting. Both sizes must be declared at the enquiry stage so the shafts and drive are sized for the larger one.

    Note 2

cold saw with a clamp. Removing the clamp or fitting a shear changes the end quality and may distort the corners.

    FAQ

Does this process also form the round downpipe?
No. A circle needs its own rolls and its own closing sequence; this roll set forms flat faces and corners.
Does it form the gutter as well?
No. The gutter is an open channel on a separate line; sharing the plant does not make it the same process.
Why is the seam on one face and not on a corner?
A corner seam is hard to close without distorting the radius, and it shows on the face the buyer looks at. Putting it on a flat face keeps the corners clean.
    Where do elbows come from?
From a pipe bender, normally quoted as an auxiliary machine. The elbow is not formed inside the forming pass count.
